"Kyd” was the pseudonym of English illustrator Joseph Clayton Clarke 1856-1937, who after only a single day's employment for Punch magazine became a freelance artist specialising in Charles Dickens for most of his career. His illustrations from Dickens were also published by Raphael Tuck in book form.

Charles Dickens was born at Landport, in Portsea, on February 7, 1812, the second of eight children, to John and Elizabeth Dickens. His father was a clerk in the Navy Pay-office and was temporarily on duty in the neighbourhood. Very soon after the birth of Charles, the family moved for a short period to Norfolk Street, Bloomsbury, and then for a long period to Chatham, in Kent, which became the real childhood home, and for all serious purposes, the native place of Dickens.
